These are available at the back of the church in alphabetical order by surname. If for any reason you no longer require envelopes [i.e. because you are now using the new Dona terminals and using the gift function] please hand them to me and they will be cancelled for next year. However, the boxes do have envelopes for the occasional special collections. Joining the scheme costs nothing as the parish simply claims back from the Inland Revenue the tax you pay on what you already give in the collection. If you would like to join the scheme please have a word with me after Mass.

Phase one of the repairs has now been completed. The tenders have gone out for phase two and the same company has been retained to finish the job. It has taken a long time to reach this stage but we are in the hands of the loss adjustor and the insurance company and cannot interfere in the process.

Banks have been increasing their charges for processing cash “payments in” at an enormous rate and our bankers [HSBC] are no exception. This means that a significant proportion of our weekly income goes in bank charges. To help offset this expense terminals will be available in the church from this weekend to enable parishioners to use debit and credit cards to make contributions. They operate in the same way as terminals in shops, restaurants, etc. Should you wish to gift aid your donation just select the option and the terminal will prompt you to enter your details. This only has to be done once as the terminals will remember your gift aid details for donations in the future using the same card.

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION 2026

This programme will commence in the New Year. Application forms are available at the back of the church. Please ensure a copy of the child’s baptismal certificate is attached to the form if they were not baptised in this parish. Completed forms should be posted through the presbytery letterbox. Any child in Year 3 and above who lives in the parish and attends Mass is eligible for First Holy Communion. Those who live outside the parish must obtain the permission of their own parish priest before applying.

COMMEMORATING NICAEA

This year we celebrate 1700 years since the Council of Nicaea in 325, which gave the Church the Creed still used at Sunday Mass. Deacon Ken Carleton, dean in the formation programme for deacons, and accomplished church historian, will lead a study day to explore how the Creed was produced, and what role was played by the Emperor Constantine in this first world Council of the Church. The study day will take place on Saturday 7th June from 10.30 (Coffee) until 2 pm, with a break for lunch, at the Catholic Church of Christ the Eternal High Priest, Gidea Park, RM2 6DH. Easy access on the Elizabeth Line, or from the M25. The programme will be live-streamed on www.whatgoodnews.org and available subsequently on the same website. You will be very welcome to attend in person as we celebrate that the Lord Jesus is ‘consubstantial with the Father’.

Many thanks to those who support this scheme. The parish bank account was recently credited with £17,209.59 by the tax[wo]man. Very many thanks also to our gift aid administrator, Ms Maxima Emmanuel, for all her hard work in making this possible. If you pay income tax and would like to join the scheme please see me after Mass. It takes just one simple form and it costs you nothing. The parish simply claims back the income tax you pay on any donations you already make to the parish in the weekly collection.

ASSISTED DYING BILL

The debate regarding this issue has been somewhat truncated by the fact that the government has allowed the matter to be dealt with by means of a private member’s bill. Such an important change in the law should never have been allowed to happen in this way. Whilst not impugning the sincerity of those who back this change the amateurish and shambolic way in which it has staggered through a “packed” committee stage in the House of Commons is worrying to say the least. For example, does anyone really believe that a handpicked group of “experts” chosen by the prime minister [who backs the change] is any substitute for an impartial and objective High Court judge being required to oversee the process of dying? Postcards provided by Not Dead Yet UK, a network of disabled people who oppose the legislation, have been included in the newsletter. These are intended to be sent to your local MP. However, please be aware that Wes Streeting, the member of parliament for Ilford North and Secretary of State for Health, has already voted against the bill at second reading. Jas Athwal, the member for Ilford South, voted in favour.

THANKYOU to all those who make our celebration of Christmas possible. A special thankyou to Angie Lobo who has for many years decorated our church with flowers in so many different and beautiful displays. She has worked tirelessly to make our celebrations worthy of the name. A special thankyou to our Tamil community who have provided the Christmas tree this year and which looks resplendent. Also to our choir who rehearse regularly in preparation for all the services and support the singing which is an integral part of our celebrations. To those who erect the crib and decorate it we are very grateful. To all our sacristans, eucharistic ministers, readers, church cleaners, ushers many thanks. We are blessed with a large group of enthusiastic, efficient and loyal altar servers who come to Mass and are a great support to me personally. It is only because I know I can rely on them and that they know what they are doing that things run so smoothly. The older servers look after and care for the younger ones who in their turn pass on their expertise. Thank you to all those who make our parish a real community and if you would like to help in the future please have a word with me after Mass. Happy Christmas!

POSADA

Today, at the beginning of the season of Advent, we welcome a “crib scene in a box”, called Posada. This is an old Mexican tradition, where young people dressed as Mary and Joseph travel from house to house in the weeks leading up to Christmas asking for a room for the night and telling people about the imminent arrival of Jesus.

The charity Toy Box took up this idea and employed Mexican street children to make the wooden characters in the Christmas story, hence the bright red, yellow and blue colours of the wooden figures.

The North Ilford Fellowship of Churches runs this event in Barkingside where the Posada travels from shop to shop during the season of Advent and visits local churches on Sunday.

There is also carol singing on 19th December when the Posada visits the local pubs.

ST AUGUSTINE’S SCHOOL

It was a pleasure and a privilege to accompany twenty-eight of the children on the pilgrimage to Rome last week. There were many highlights for them and I am sure they will remember the experience for a long time to come. Some of the people staying with us at the English College villa outside of Rome commented on how well behaved and polite the children are. They were a credit to themselves, their parents and carers and to the school. The teachers were quite well behaved as well!

Last summer Bishop Alan invited Catholics who no longer regularly come to Church to get in touch so that he could seriously listen to their stories and experiences and begin to understand why so many Catholics no longer feel as though they belong in the Church.

This report presents a moving and challenging insight into how our Church and the covid-19 pandemic have contributed to a movement away from a regular practice of faith for many Catholics and offers our Church a rich repository of wisdom that might enhance and inform our ongoing journey of renewal in the diocese.

1ST HOLY COMMUNION & CONFIRMATION 2024

The dates for the First Communion programme have already been circulated to the parents/carers of those children already registered. The proposed dates for the Confirmation programme are 23rd & 30th April and 7th & 14th May, 7 – 8.30pm. The rehearsal will take place on Saturday, 1st June at 10am in the church. The Bishop is conferring the Sacrament this year so the Confirmation Mass will be on Wednesday, 5th June at 7.30pm.

FIRE SAFETY

The church, hall and presbytery have recently undergone inspections in respect of fire safety. This has resulted in recommendations being made that must be implemented in order that our insurance remains valid. I will be making an announcement about these measures at the end of Mass this weekend but you will, perhaps, have already noticed the new fire alarms next to all the exits from the church. These should be activated in the usual way should you discover a fire in the church. Fire alarms will sound throughout the building and it should be evacuated quickly and in an orderly fashion through the nearest exit. Please help those less able to exit if you are able to. Parents please ensure that little fingers do not activate the alarms unnecessarily as this will cause major disruption.

This programme will commence in the New Year. Application forms are available at the back of the church. Please ensure a copy of the baptismal certificate is attached to the application form . Completed forms should be posted through the presbytery letterbox.

Any young person born on or before 31st August 2008 who lives in the parish and attends Mass regularly is eligible for Confirmation. Those who live outside the parish must obtain the permission of their own parish priest before applying for either Sacrament.

St Augustine's Choir Concert

Saturday 11 th November at 7.30pm.

The choir will be performing some of our favourite pieces in a concert in memory of our dear friend, Christine Kay, who was a long-serving member of the choir. The concert will also include new items which we know Chris would have enjoyed too. The concert is free of charge and there will be a retiring collection from which a donation will be made to a charity chosen by Chris's family. This is our first concert since the pandemic and we are delighted to welcome new singers to their performance with us. Please do come along and support.

SCHOOL STREET

A reminder the School Street scheme at St. Augustine’s Catholic Primary School has come into effect. The School Street scheme means that during term time, vehicular traffic - motorcycles, cars, vans, and lorries, will be prohibited from driving into the area within the School Street scheme. The School Street scheme will operate on Loudoun Avenue and Veronique Gardens on weekdays, during term-time only between:

 Morning (8:00am - 9:15am)

 Afternoon (2:30pm - 3:45pm)

A Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) will be issued to the owner of any vehicle that enters the School Street area without exemption. The fee for a Moving Traffic Contravention is £130, for which there is a 50% discount if it is paid within 14 days.

If you receive a ticket indicating a fine for attending morning Mass you must challenge it immediately. The school has been in touch with the council about the problem but individual fines are a personal matter and must be appealed by the vehicle owner.

World Mission Sunday

COVID MEASURES

The wearing of masks is, of course, fine for those who wish to continue doing so. The Sign of Peace at Mass may be offered in any way in which an individual feels comfortable. The holy water stoops have been refilled. Again, it is traditional to bless oneself with holy water when entering and leaving the church, but it is not obligatory. Let us continue to be sensitive to one another in these areas especially as winter approaches.

NEW CHOIR MEMBERS WELCOME

Our choir would like to welcome new members from the Parish of all ages. It would also be great to see former members of the folk group. No previous experience is necessary. We rehearse every Thursday from 7.15 to 8.30pm and will be resuming on 10th November after half term to prepare Christmas music for the Parish Carol service and midnight Mass. We also sing at the 11am Mass on the first and third Sundays of the month, at important events and weddings and we perform an annual concert. Covid Restrictions

These have all been lifted by the government and have been replaced with advice. However, some people will remain concerned and hesitant about how to proceed. In this parish we have always been sensitive to reasonable concerns but now the emphasis must move to returning to some form of normality. Masks are no longer obligatory but please feel free to continue wearing them if you prefer. Hand sanitiser will continue to be available as you enter the church. Holy Water will once again be available at the back of the church but the stoops will remain empty for the time being. Holy Communion will continue to be given only in the hand and the chalice will not be re-introduced at the moment. The sign of peace will continue to be omitted but again please feel free to offer it to members of your family and those you know would welcome it. As always I am very grateful for your cooperation both now and throughout the last difficult two years

WINTER WARMERS

As the season approaches it will be necessary to strike a balance between heating and ventilating the church. As you know the COVID advice is that enclosed spaces should be well ventilated in order to prevent infection. There can be no point in heating the church only to open the windows and doors and allow all the heat to escape. This is especially so taking into consideration the current price of gas on which the church heaters run. Therefore, please take this into account when coming to church and wear extra layers. As always I am grateful for your understanding and cooperation.

CHRISTMAS MASSES

There will be a Christmas Vigil Mass on Christmas Eve at 6.30pm. Midnight Mass will be at midnight preceded by carols at 11.30pm [sung by the choir only]. It is expected that these two Masses will be well attended so please register your intention to attend preferably by email but also by telephoning or in writing with a contact telephone number. Leave your name clearly, the number of seats you require and the time of the Mass you intend to come to. Your place will then be confirmed. Do not come to the church without a confirmed place as it may be necessary to limit numbers due to social distancing and you may be turned away. Masses on Christmas morning will be at 8am, 9am, 10am & 11am. There is no need to book a place for these.

FIRST COMMUNIONS 2021 – For obvious reasons there is uncertainty regarding which groups will be allowed to meet as the winter draws on. Therefore, with the kind permission of the Headmaster, preparation for First Holy Communion will take place in the school. It will start in the Spring term and application forms will be available in school and in the church in due course. There will be a parish based group for those who do not attend St Augustine’s school.

St Augustine’s will be open for MASS on

Saturdays at 6.30pm and on Sundays at 9am &11am each weekend until further

notice. Stewards will be present in the church so please follow their instructions

at all times. The social distancing rules which apply generally continue to apply

within the church precincts. Those from the same household may sit together but

those from differing households must obey the new metre rule. The benches are

marked accordingly. If you would like to volunteer as a steward or in helping to

clean the church please email. Volunteers should not belong to either a group

being shielded or who are particularly vulnerable.

As of necessity the experience of the Mass will be somewhat different. Singing

is forbidden. Mass will proceed in the usual way, although slightly truncated,

until Holy Communion. At this point communicants will proceed in an orderly,

socially distanced queue towards the minister. Upon arrival at the point of Holy

Communion the communicant should extend their hand for reception of the

Sacred Host. The minister will say nothing and neither will the communicant.

The Sacred Host should be consumed at once. The communicant then returns to

their place in the church. Holy Communion on the tongue and from the chalice

are still not allowed. Mass will end in the usual way. By all means say “Hello”

to friends and parishioners whom you will not have seen for some time but

please always remember to abide by the social distancing rules. We are subject

to inspection and could be closed down again if we do not abide by the

regulations. Weekday Mass has resumed usually at 8.30am. However, please

see the newsletter for occasional variations.

The obligation to attend Mass on Sundays is still suspended. Therefore, should

you prefer to come during the week when there will be fewer people please feel

free to do so. Needless to say, we are still having to pay the bills even though the

church has been closed. It is possible to make a donation online through the

parish website [address overleaf].

REOPENING OF CHURCHES

St Augustine’s will be open for MASS on

Saturday, 4th July at 6.30pm and on Sunday 5th at 9am &11am and thereafter at

these times each weekend until further notice. I am hoping to be able to resume

the 8.30am weekday Mass but this will depend on the availability of volunteers.

Stewards will be present in the church so please follow their instructions at all

times. The social distancing rules which apply generally continue to apply

within the church precincts. Those from the same household may sit together but

those from differing households must obey the new one-metre+ rule. The

benches are marked accordingly. If you would like to volunteer as a steward or

in helping to clean the church please email. Volunteers should not belong to

either a group being shielded or who are particularly vulnerable.
