Welcome to the website for St Augustine of Canterbury, Barkingside
Our church is named in honour of St Augustine, a Benedictine monk who is considered to be the 'Apostle to the English' and a founder of the English Church. He was appointed as the first Archbishop of Canterbury in the year 598 and was revered as Saint shortly after his death
St Augustine's began as a temporary Roman Catholic church in 1928. Our primary school was then opened in 1938 with the church we worship in today finally built in 1954. As you can imagine, there have been many people who have joined together with us in prayer in that time and we would like to invite you, to join us with us whether you be catholic or not. You would be more than welcome within the parish.
On the 10th June 2007, the Parish was very honoured to receive his Excellency; Archbishop 'Faustino Sainz Munoz', Apostolic Nuncio to mark the 25th anniversary of the pastoral visit of His Holiness Pope John Paul II whereupon he blessed the mosaic as seen above the main entrance to the church.
